Double delight step by step tutorial
This is a step by step tutorial to assist in the making of the Double Delight tote bag pattern which can be found here.
Prepare, stitch and make the hexie panel as per the instructions.
Position onto the background linen outer bag fabric. Fold each panel in half and finger press the centre creases. Match creases when positioning. Use Roxanne’s glue baste it to baste into place and then applique down by hand using a HNK applique needle and fine blending thread or by machine using Monopoly thread and a blind hem stitch.
Handles:
Sew two handle strips right sides together – note they are different widths so you will sew one side, then pull the other cross to meet raw edges and sew the other side. Turn through and press so that the smaller strip is central on one side. Cut handles into two equal lengths.
Using a bodkin or safety pin feed through the bag batting strip down the centre of your tube. Again press so that it is centred and flat.
Fuse or spray baste foam bag batting or stabiliser/interfacing to wrong side of the outer fabric panel.
I then quilted in the ditch of the hexies with a blending/monopoly thread.
Quilt the rest of your panel as desired or as I have done:
Use a chalk pencil or Blue water soluble pen and a 1 ½” hexie template to mark vertical hexie lines on both sides of the hexie panel. Hand quilt with the embroidery thead, or machine quilt with a blending thread to the linen.
Position and pin handles to outer bag panel either side of the hexie strip at top and bottom edge.
Fold the outer bag in half right sides together and stitch down both side seams. Turn to right side and press well.
Fold lining piece in half right sides together and sew down both sides leaving a 4” opening in one side.
With the lining right side in, and the bag right side out – place the outer bag inside the lining bag. Match the side seams and the top raw edges. Ensure the handles are folded down inside the bag.
Stitch around the top edge.
Turn through the opening And stitch opening closed.
Push the lining down into The bag smoothly and press the top seam so that no lining is showing from the outside.
Edgestitch around the top edge with a blending thread. Press well.
