Hurkle Durkle Step by step tutorial
For those who are visual learners this step by step photo tutorial in conjunction with the pattern available here will assist in the construction of the Hurkle Durkle Ruler pouch
Fuse HNK stabiliser to the outer bag strip and apply the bias vine and the applique following our easy applique method or your normal method.
Press and trim back the panel as instructed.
Spray baste the lining strip to the bag batting. Using a walking foot and blending thread quilt through both layers. You can just straight lines or anything you desire
.
Place wrong sides together with the applique panel ensuring the panel is centred. Using a free motion foot and blending thread carefully outline quilt the applique pieces through all layers. Trim the quilted panel as instructed
Pockets:
Fuse the stabiliser to all three pocket pieces. It will be ½” shorter on one end.
Double fold a ¼” hem on the short end to the wrong side. Edge stitch from the front.
Stitch one side of your hook & loop tape to the top centre of each piece approximately ¾” from the top hemmed edge.
Pocket flaps:
Fuse stabiliser to the wrong side of all 3 pocket flaps.
Attach the opposite piece of hook and loop tape ½” from the raw edge and centred.
Fold each piece in half right sides together. Mark with a circle template a curved corner on each end. Cut off ¼” from the curved mark.
Stitch with a ¼” seam allowance around the open edges leaving a small opening at one short end. Clip the curves and turn to the right side.
Edge stitch around the short and bottom curved edges.
Place the small pocket on top of the middle sized pocket – both right sides up with bottom edges even. Position a flap above the small pocket so that the hook&loop tapes meet. Edge stitch along the top edge of the flap to secure to the middle sized pocket. (ensure everything is centred).
Now place the middle sized pocket on top of the large pocket- again with the bottom edges even and repeat the process with the flap.
Finally place the large pocket right side up on the quilted panel – with bottom edges even and attach the top flap. There should be a ½” gap between the flap and the top edge of the panel.
Lay all pockets on top of each other in order. Place on the lining side of the outer panel – all pocket flaps should meet with their hook&loop partner and all bottom edges should be even. Edge baste a 1/8” around all edges through all layers to hold.
Handles: fold the handle strip in half and press centre line. Open and press both raw edges to the centre fold. Then fold in half and press.
Edgestitch down both sides of your handle. Optional: if you want a stronger handle you can fuse a strip of stabiliser inside your strip.
Position the handle on the pocket side of your panel at the top end. Pin each side approximately 1 ½” from the edges. Baste
Binding:
Join the two binding strips together with a bias join to spread the bulk. Press wrong sides together along the length.
Attach the binding to the applique side of the panel using a walking foot and ¼” seam allowance, mitring the corners as you go. (ensure your binding stitch line does not catch the pocket flaps on the other side – they should be a generous ¼” shorter than the bag on each side)
Finish with a mitred join.
Turn to the pocket side, pin and blind hem stitch into place. (or edge stitch from the front by machine
